SOUND PORTRAITS KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH

KAITLYN AURELIA
SMITH

EPISODE 14

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is an American composer, performer and producer, originally from Orcas Island, Washington. By combining the organic elements of her upbringing with the deep technological skill gained from her studies at Berklee College of Music, Smith’s impact on modern music via the Buchla has been distinct and significant. Smith’s upward trajectory has been cemented with the release of acclaimed full-length albums, including the Western Vinyl releases Euclid in 2015, EARS the following year, and most recently The Kid. Similarly her collaborations, such as Sunergy with new age pioneer Suzanne Ciani, have earned numerous best-of nods from Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone and SPIN. Beside touring worldwide, she regularly scores film, TV shows and spots for brands with a client list including Google, Reggie Watts, Ben Dickinson’s short film Brasilia, and a forthcoming movie produced by the Duplass brothers. Kaitlyn is particularly concerned with the act of listening and how this shapes both the creation and perception of music. This episode of Sound Portraits Radio is hosted by Arian Bozorg.

About Sound Portraits

Sound Portraits is a series of lectures/listening sessions, curated by Doron Sadja, focusing on the work of iconic composers who have paved the way for contemporary electronic music. Started in 2015 as a live event at Spektrum in Berlin, the series quickly grew and exists now as both a live lecture series and a radio show on Cashmere Radio.  After an introduction of each artist’s life and work, we listen to a selection of excerpts and complete works from the artist’s repertoire. Besides providing an opportunity to introduce these seminal artists to a new audience, the Sound Portraits series also offers an open forum to engage in group listening in a quiet atmosphere.

Doron Sadja is an American artist, composer, and curator whose work explores modes of perception and the experience of sound, light, and space. Find out more at www.doron.sadja.com
